Believing that every single thing belongs to Allah (nothing is ours though we claim so), and wealth is therefore held by us is a trust is one of the most important principles of Islam.
The word Zakah means ‘purification’ and ‘growth’. In other words, our wealth is purified by setting aside a part of it for those in need. This is similar to pruning of a plant. The wealth is purified and grown by cutting back the balances.
The obligatory nature of Zakah is explained in the Qur’an in nearly 30 places.
“….establish prayer and give zakah and loan Allah a goodly loan. And whatever good you put forward for yourselves – you will find it with Allah. It is better and greater in reward. And seek forgiveness of Allah. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful”. (Noble Qur’an, Surah 73:20)
Zakah will not only purify the wealth but in turn it helps the poor and needy among the Muslim to come out of poverty with the help of Allah. It further helps our new Muslim Brothers and Sisters to hold on and be steadfast to the truth. In a way, it is a true practical manifestation of brotherhood between us and links the rich and poor among us. This strengthens the individual’s sense of belonging to the community and the community’s to the value of the individual.
Allah, the most High clearly describes the beneficiaries or to whom it should go to in Surah at-Taubah, verse 60. According to this Ayah, among the eight are those:
- · The poor (Faqir/Fuqara) or those without any means of livelihood and material possessions.
- · The needy (Miskeen) or those without sufficient means of livelihood to meet their basic necessities.
- · The sympathizers (Muallaf-at-Quloobuhum) or those whose hearts are inclined towards or have accepted Islam.
With these goals, DA’WAH CORNER TRUST’s Zakah Distribution Program in Ramadan intends to reach the above three groups (New Muslims in the third category). Through this distribution effort each breadwinner in a family will get Rs.1000 and each member will get Rs.500. For example, a family of 5 including the breadwinner will get a total of Rs.3000.

The Prophet (Peace Be on Him) said, “Every Muslim must perform a charity.” They asked, “Messenger of God, what if a person cannot find anything to give?” He answered, “He should work with his hands to benefit himself and give in charity.” “And what if he could not find that?” they asked again. “He should assist an aggrieved person in need.” “And what if he could not do that?” “Then he should do good and refrain from evil – that would be his charity.” (Related by al-Bukhari)
May Allah help us to distribute our Zakah to the most deserving and earn the Mercy of Allah in the month of Mercy.
